Rose M. Ockenga (nee Lojewski}, 94 and a Wakeman resident, passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at Stein Hospice, Sandusky after a massive stroke. She was born August 16, 1923 in Cleveland, Ohio and had been a resident of Wakeman for over 45 years. She was employed by U.S. Steel during WWII. After her marriage she , in partnership with her husband John W. Ockenga, ran an oil distributorship business in Cleveland and later their farm in Wakeman and their mobile home park. Rose loved to travel, and despite the fact that she never learned to drive, managed to roam far and wide. Her generous nature led her to finance many wonderful trips for family and friends. She loved her slot machines and spent many a happy hour with her good friends at casinos. Always an excellent cook, in her later years Rose could be found at least several times a week in her kitchen baking cookies, cakes, nut rolls and her specialty butternut squash dinner rolls. A third grade class at the Western Reserve School benefited from her baking as she was the class "grandmother". Seminarians, juveniles in detention and the homeless also received regular gifts of her baked goods. Every Friday she volunteered at Fisher-Titus Hospital, Norwalk, and enjoyed working with fellow volunteers and the staff. For years she organized the annual rummage sale at St. Mary Parish, Wakeman. Survivors include her son David (Mary Jo} of Wakeman, grand-daughter Sarah DePew (Ron} of Ashland and grand-son Luke of Denver, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her husband John W., her sister Helen Fernandez and her parents Frank & Martha Lojewski. Friends may call on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Morman Funeral Home, 16 Cooper St., Wakeman. The funeral Mass will be Saturday at 10:30 am at St. Mary Parish , 46 E. Main St., Wakeman. Messages of condolence may be left at mormanfuneralhome.com The family suggests memorial donations be made to St. Mary Church, 46 E Main St., Wakeman, OH 44889; Fisher-Titus Medical Center, 272 Benedict Ave., Norwalk, OH 44857; or Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870.

Thoughts and prayers to the family. My dad, Robert Tolliver was a good friend. He would plant a garden for Rose. Just this week he took some fresh garlic over and left in the door for her. He enjoyed hearing about her travels. He will miss their talks.
